San Diego played host to some of the world’s biggest stars over the weekend as Comic-Con took place, and guess what? Heaps of them were Australian. In further proof that Hollywood can’t get enough of Aussies, we spotted plenty of expats — many of them attending their first Comic-Con — talking up their new projects and meeting with excited fans. Phoebe Tonkin and Claire Holt were on hand for their show The Originals, while Sophie Lowe led the cast of Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Hugh Jackman was part of the star-studded panel for X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Liam Hemsworth reunited with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and the rest of the Catching Fire crew to debut an exciting new trailer. A cocktail party thrown for actress Hailee Steinfeld by Max Mara and W Magazine in LA last night attracted a selection of Hollywood’s hottest starlets, including a handful of Australian actresses experiencing success abroad. Expats Phoebe Tonkin, Jessica McNamee, Yvonne Strahovski, Sarah Snook, Emilie de Ravin and Grace Huang mingled with a Max Mara and Sportmax-clad crowd that included Revenge’s Ashley Madekwe and Christa B. Allen, Sophia Bush and Louise Roe. While Sarah loved catching up with her friends, she also saw the event as an “opportunity to meet some of the industry’s most inspiring women.” Hailee was the recipient of the 2013 Women in Film Max Mara Face of the Future Award to celebrate her career and style achievements.

Australian style is out in force today in LA, with the Aussies-in-Hollywood crew putting on their best glad rags for the 2012 Australians in Film Awards. Liam Hemsworth brought his bride-to-be Miley Cyrus, who looked super sexy in a form-fitting Zimmermann LBD, whilst home-grown actresses Abbie Cornish, Yvonne Strahovski and Phoebe Tonkin went for a lighter approach in elegant white dresses and Rafters-alum Jessica McNamee looked cute in a printed onesie. Winner of the 2012 Heath Ledger scholarship Anna McGahan got glam in an aubergine gown, while Natalie Imbruglia opted for the cocktail frock route in a digital-printed shift. See how these Aussie expats work it, Hollywood style, on the red carpet.
It’s a big day for Australian actors in Hollywood today, with many of our brightest stars and upcoming talent gathering for the 2012 Australians in Film Awards. Engaged couple Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus were among the first stars to hit the red carpet, with Abbie Cornish, Callan McAuliffe, Phoebe Tonkin, Yvonne Strahovski and Natalie Imbruglia not far behind. Anna McGahan, this year’s recipient of the Heath Ledger scholarship, wore a printed dress for an earlier portrait session and changed into an aubergine gown for the awards and benefit dinner. It’s not only Aussies, though, who came out for the event — Harvey Weinstein and Wes Bentley offered their support while Liam’s Hunger Games leading lady Jennifer Lawrence is also expected to make an appearance.
Some of our favourite things about award season are the stylish after parties that come with it. Last night after the Golden Globe Awards, celebs flocked to a number of fashionable fêtes dressed in their best party attire. We spotted festive cocktail dresses, gorgeous Grecian gowns, shimmery sequined dresses, and even a sleek pant suit worn by the ever-chic Evan Rachel Wood. Want to know who wore what? Just check out our slideshow for the complete rundown now!
Some of our biggest Aussie exports were among the A-listers at the Golden Globes in LA yesterday. Awards show regular Nicole Kidman had presenting duties during the show, and was accompanied on the red carpet by husband Keith Urban on her way in. Guy Pearce was the only Australian nominated, in the best supporting actor in a TV series or miniseries category for his role in Mildred Pierce, but the honour went to Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage. Elle Macpherson, who’s hosting a new NBC show called Fashion Star, also made a stage appearance to present with Ashton Kutcher, and then hit the after parties. See which other Aussies rubbed shoulders with Hollywood stars, including Miranda Kerr, Ryan Kwanten and more!
Miranda Kerr, Teresa Palmer and Delta Goodrem were among the Australian stars in attendance at the G’Day USA Black Tie Gala, held in LA on Saturday night. The event kicks off G’Day USA’s three-week Australia Week program, and this year’s honourees were Guy Pearce (the only Aussie nominated for a Golden Globe), basketball player Luc Longley, and music duo Air Supply. Miranda, fresh from celebrating her new role with Qantas, wowed in a sexy dress with cut-outs, while Delta, Teresa and Renee Bargh wore different takes on the black dress. Other stars who donned their finest for the evening include Yvonne Strahovski, Simon Baker, The Slap’s Jonathan LaPaglia, and Jack Vigden, who performed for the crowd.
Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis looked dapper in their suits for the world premiere of The Hangover Part II in LA today. In the movie their characters look worse for wear a lot of the time so their scrubbed-up appearances were a very welcome change! They were joined by co-stars Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson, while Jamie Chung, who plays Ed’s fiancée, added some glamour to the red carpet. Kristen Bell looked lovely in a two-tone dress and gave a kiss to the drug-dealing monkey in the movie, while other stars who turned up for the comedy include Robert Downey Jr., mother-to-be Alyssa Milano, Sean Combs and Yvonne Strahovski.
As proved by the recent G’Day USA Black Tie Gala and continuing Australia Week in the US, plus the best endorsement you could get — a four episode special on Oprah Winfrey’s show — Australia is having a moment. Not that we needed a fancy event or the Queen of TV’s approval to tell us that! We’ve always had amazing talent and some of our best are making their mark on the international scene. So whether they’ve stayed to work on local soil, are living their Hollywood dreams or happen to be European princesses, check out some of our favourite homegrown beauties to celebrate Australia Day!
